Yesterday, a group of Scottish micro-breweries raised a glass to their new distribution deal with UK supermarket chain Morrisons. In the terms of the new supply contract, Williams Brothers, the brewer behind brands Birds & Bees, Midnight Sun and Seven Giraffes, will act as the supermarket’s beer-buyer in Scotland.

Williams will supply Morrisons’ 60 stores in Scotland with tipples produced by other small brewers as well as its own. Initially, the new deal will only encompass Fyne Ales, Traditional Scottish Ales, Inveralmond and the Isle of Skye Brewery, but Williams is hoping that the contract could extend to other producers.

Eleven new beers are set to be listed in Morrisons next week, with plans to extend the range during next year. Richard McLelland, director of sales at Williams Brothers and a member of the “brotherhood”, an informal alliance of Scottish brewers, said: “Morrisons already stocks a large range of beers but many of them are English and some of them don’t sell so well in Scotland. So the supermarket was talking to the industry and I jumped in and volunteered to run this scheme.

“The first orders will be for two pallets from each brewery and, with 96 cases on a pallet, that’s a big order. If this builds up into regular work then it can act as a firm foundation for breweries to expand. Supermarkets are sometimes painted as big and bad and evil but in fact they pay their bills on time and they can give you predictions for what they need in terms of stock, which can help you to build your business and take on extra staff during busy periods. The cash coming in from a deal like this can also help you to expand into different ranges and try doing different things.”

Tuggy Delap, chair of the Scottish branch of the Society of Independent Brewers, whose family also runs Fyne Ales, said: “One of my hopes from this deal is that customers will drink the bottled beers at home and then try them in pubs too the next time they see them on draft. We have avoided supermarket contracts in the past because we have to be realistic about our costs. But I think Williams Brothers has done us all proud with this deal.”

Colin Valentine, the Edinburgh-based chairman of the Campaign for Real Ale, added: “It’s pleasing to see so many real ale brewers getting wider exposure.”

AN AWARD-WINNING brewery near Bridlington has landed a top industry prize at the Society of independent Brewers (SIBA) Business Awards last week.

Wold Top Brewery, based in Wold Newton, picked up the award for Best Design Concept for its new look labels, pumpclips, gift packs and marketing materials.

The award comes just weeks after the brewery’s success in the Yorkshire Post Taste Awards and the SIBA Great Northern Beer Competition.

Gill Mellor, who is responsible for marketing at the brewery, said: “This is a great result for us. With our creative partner, Carrot Juice, we worked hard on the rebranding and on the nomination for best design concept and it’s fantastic to win public recognition from our peers and industry experts.”

Wold Top Brewery was established in 2003 out of a need to diversify from farming and uses the farm’s own barley and chalk filtered water to produce ales.

The brewery employs 11 staff and distributes to retailers and pubs throughout Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

SIBA was founded in 1980 and currently has over 500 members mostly classed as ‘micro’ or ‘local’ brewers.

The SIBA Brewing Business Awards are now in their sixth year and celebrate the business development skills and entrepreneurial flair of SIBA’s members.

An independent Bristol brewery has won one of the UK’s top food and drink awards, recognising not just its beers but its role in regenerating South Bristol.

The Bristol Beer Factory in Southville has won the ‘Best Drinks Producer’ in the BBC Food and Farming Awards, the ‘Oscars’ of the industry.

The award was presented at a ceremony last night and the brewery will be included in a special awards programme to be aired on BBC Radio Four at 12 noon on Friday (25th November).

The shortlisted entrants were decided on votes from the public and the winners by an expert panel of judges chaired by chef and restauranteur Richard Corrigan.

The judges liked the fact that the Bristol Beer Factory is at the heart of the community in Southville and Ashton and central to the regeneration of the area. They also loved the Brewery’s ‘Twelve Stouts of Christmas’ idea of a dozen beers specially-created to celebrate the festive season, including one made with fresh raspberries, which are being launched this Saturday (26th November).

George Ferguson, founder of the Bristol Beer Factory says: “We see this as an accolade for Bristol and the craft beer industry as a whole and feel very lucky to be representing independent brewers up and down the country who put so much care and attention into producing high quality craft beers.”

“We strongly believe that independent local businesses, whatever they are, are capable of producing higher quality products and services than national mass-producers and they make a vital contribution to the local economy supporting local suppliers and investing proceeds into the area.”

Chair of judges Richard Corrigan said about the winners: “They are working hard to save some of our greatest craft skills and artisinal traditions and reflect where Britiain is today and give us optimism for our future.”

Bristol Beer Factory was founded six years ago after a chance conversation in the Tobacco Factory, when George Ferguson decided to buy the building which now houses the brewery, which was then under threat. Originally known as the Ashton Gate Brewery, which boasted 120 pubs in the area, it was closed after Georges Brewery took it over in 1933 and the building stood empty since then. Initially unsure about what to do with it, George came up with the idea of returning it to brewing over a drink in the bar of the Tobacco Factory over the road.

The BBF started out as a traditional brewer but in the past couple of years has moved to the forefront of the craft brewing industry.

George continues: “As an architect interested in place-making, I believe that beer-making, along with great good, can play an important role in regenerating an area. Pubs have always been the heart of any community and we feel there should be local beers to go in them. But it’s not just about the ales we create, it’s also about being part of the local community and local economy. Like other independent brewers, we’re not aiming to be the biggest, but strive to be the best we can.”

The Bristol Beer Factory is having an Open Day at the brewery this Saturday to launch their ‘Twelve Stouts of Christmas’, with beers to sample, specially made ‘beery’ food, brewery tours and goodies to buy for Christmas.

Loanhead’s independent brewery is on top of the world – again!

Stewart Brewing’s pale ale, Hollyrood, has been declared the world’s best blond/golden pale ale at the World Beer Awards 2011. It is the second year in a row the firm, based at Bilston Glen Industrial Estate, has won the top award.

The accolade will now go alongside Hollyrood’s further five awards – SIBA Regional Gold, SIBA National Silver, Europe’s Best Beer Gold 2010, World’s Best Beer Gold 2010 and the International Beer Challenge Gold.

Stewart Brewing’s Hollyrood beat off strong competition including multi-award winning Fin de la Monde to win the world title after being awarded Europe’s best blond/golden pale ale earlier in the competition.

The awards involve a taste-off against more than 500 entries from around the world. Judges described Hollyrood as “light and hazy”, “lovely nose, apricot aroma, elderflower coming through”, “refreshing” and “good example of its style”.

Steve Stewart, brewery founder, said: “This is a fabulous achievement. The fact that we have won this great award for the second year running is all thanks to the hard work and dedication for all the staff here at Stewart Brewing.”

Oakham Ales, the acclaimed innovative ale brewery based in the East Midlands, is the only brewer worldwide to have access to the Baby Belma hop. The beer is a result of the Brewery’s Production Director, John Bryan, being introduced to the hop on his annual research trip to the USA.

Grown in the North West of USA in the lower Yakima Valley, John’s good working relationship with the growers, built up over the years, has enabled him to have first option on the Baby Belma crop when he sampled them earlier this year. He has enough for one brew only.

The 4.1% A.B.V ale is light copper in colour with a subtle orange fruit aroma. The initial taste is a fresh fruit zestiness which softens to reveal some sweetness from the malt combining with orange peel flavours giving a delicate dry finish.

John Bryan, Oakham Ales Production Director said: “I love to experiment with new hops and it is a privilege to be entrusted with the Baby Belma crop by the growers. I’m confident that our new Baby Belma will do justice to that expectation”.

Baby Belma will be available on draught nationally while stocks last through the free trade and via selected distributors. For further sales information contact Oakham Ales on telephone: 01733 370500 or e-mail: sales@oakhamales.com

Butcombe, the West Country’s fastest growing Brewery, has more than doubled its volume of bottled beer sales over the past twelve months. The Brewery’s latest initiative has seen them join forces with famous television presenter and partner of The Cotswold Farm Park, Adam Henson. Together, they have used the finest local ingredients: Maris Otter malting barley, aromatic Herefordshire hops and Mendip spring water, to create this distinctive refreshing and clean tasting golden ale – Adam Henson’s Rare Breed.

Adam Henson’s Rare Breed will be launching in bottle within the fifty largest Tesco stores in the South West as well as within all Booker’s 150 England and Wales Depots from mid-November 2011. It will be available on draught from the 1st January 2012 through Butcombe’s own retail estate and the local Free Trade. Heineken will be promoting Adam Henson’s Rare Breed nationally throughout the month of February.

Chris Minter, Local Marketing Manager – South, Tesco says; “We are delighted to be able to offer another Butcombe product in the form of Adam Henson’s Rare Breed ale, it’s great to be working with such an enthusiastic team and with Adam’s pedigree we have very high hopes for the success of this launch.”

Guy Newell, Managing Director, Butcombe Brewery says; “Having Adam’s name on the beer will appeal to the millions of people who watch him regularly on the television and his endorsement is likely to introduce many new consumers not only to Rare Breed but also the rest of the Butcombe range.”

An award-winning brewery is hoping to tap into a growing market of cask ale drinkers with the launch of a new range of beers.

Later this month, Ilkley Brewery will introduce three craft-kegged beers and increase their presence at pubs in West Yorkshire where products were previously unavailable.

The brews, called MJ Artisan Ales, will be unveiled at the North Bar in Leeds city centre, which did not have the space to serve Ilkley Brewery beers.

A recent report claimed there are almost eight million cask ale drinkers in the United Kingdom, with the number of 18 to 24-year-olds drinking cask ales on the rise.

“Demand for our cask-conditioned ales continues to rise but in order for city centre bars, restaurants and hotels to serve our beers, we needed to create something that didn’t require bulky hand pumps and a time-consuming process in order to serve cask-conditioned beer,” said Luke Raven from the brewery.

“Kegged beers are a perfect solution for bar areas with limited service and cellar space.”

The new beers are called MJ Pale, MJ Summit and MJ Fortis.

They will be launched on Wednesday, November 16, at the North Bar.
